What is the story behind this dish?

The story of this dish is quite interesting. It takes us to a lady named Chen Qiaoqiao, who lived a simple and ordinary life until she lost her husband due to an illness; leaving her with deep sorrow, which caused her to focus more on cooking.

And one day, with the ingredients her friends and loved ones occasionally gifted her, such as meat, soy cheese, and others; she decided to create something different. She envisioned a dish made with minced meat, cubed tofu, and a series of seasonings, which amazed everyone who tasted it. Those who tried it encouraged her to open a restaurant.

From there, the dish gained popularity throughout China, becoming a culinary milestone, and is now prepared in various countries around the world.

Characteristics of the dish

Known as mapo doufu or mapo tofu, it is a dish originating from Sichuan, prepared with tofu and a spicy bean and chili sauce; accompanied by minced meat, which can be pork or beef. Over the years, additional ingredients like onion, garlic, and other vegetables have also been added.

Besides its potent flavor, it is a good source of proteins, amino acids, iron, calcium, and vitamin B1. It is also rich in zinc, copper, and magnesium.
