Appetizers are undoubtedly essential to accompany any kind of drink, but especially tea. This is highly valued in China, where Dim sum has even been crowned as the most desirable appetizer due to its flavor.

What is the history of this dish?

As with many dishes from this beautiful nation, pinpointing the exact origin and history of Dim sum is almost impossible, although theories about it abound.

One theory suggests it originates from the Canton region, an area known for preparing many dishes with characteristics similar to Dim sum.

The second theory tells us that it originated along the Silk Road; Dim sum has a curious tradition of always being served with a cup of tea. This tradition is linked to the story that travelers on this route needed to create these snacks to accompany their tea and make the journey easier.

The last and most well-known legend states that Dim sum was created by court chefs, who made these snacks to touch the heart and win the favor of the imperial dynasty; this is related to their name, which literally means “touch the heart”.

Characteristics and variants

This food is described as a filled dough, containing different ingredients depending on the region where it is prepared. Traditionally, it includes meat, seafood, fruits, and vegetables, and is served with a cup of tea.

These appetizers have various variants and preparation methods, and can be steamed or fried. The most popular variant is the Char siew bao, a bun filled with meat, rice, and some vegetables.
